Overview – Moloughney’s, No. 9, Vernon Avenue, Clontarf, Dublin 3

There is nothing we like better on an a Sunday evening, or any evening, when out and about in the Dublin area, than booking a table at our friends’ Liam & Michelle Moloughney’s restaurant to enjoy a bite to eat.  (Quick tip, booking is advisable).

Having done this many times now since they opened their doors, and taken lots of photographs on my phone (with Chef-Patron Liam’s kind permission, of course!) I thought it was about time I brought along my “good” camera, and try to do the food justice.  So, after many great meals (that’s the best part!),  and several hundred photos later, I hope I’ve done just that!

Liam and Michelle Moloughney opened their neighbourhood restaurant – Moloughney’s – on Vernon Avenue, Clontarf, three years ago, and, despite the recession, have gone from strength to strength, building on their reputation for good food, with a friendly atmosphere, and well informed and attentive staff.

Having followed their progress, from the planning of the restaurant through to the opening, it is great to see this business thriving.

The menu changes with the seasons, and suppliers are also listed.  Children are certainly not forgotten here either, as Liam and Michelle are parents themselves, and know what it is like to eat out with hungry kids ones in tow.  You won’t find any processed items on offer, no nuggets or tinned baked beans here. The Sunday Lunch menu for children (or Juniors, as they are known in Moloughney’s) has such items as Soups, Chicken Goujons & Chunky hand-cut chips, Roast meat of the day with veg and creamy mash, to name just a few.  There is also a selection of desserts for the kids too, such as Chocolate & Oatmeal Cookies, and  Chocolate Brownie & Ice Cream.  Even though we don’t have a young child anymore (she’s all grown up now!), I still judge a restaurant by the quality of their Children’s menu.

As I do not always feel like having the usual main course sized portions, I sometimes order two smaller dishes, i.e. starters.  This is not a problem at Moloughney’s, and is not greeted with the puzzled or distainful look I have, so often, received in other establishments.  I also like to ask that one dish be brought as a starter, and the other as a main.

The following is a selection from the Summer 2012 menu
Complimentary Home-made breads
Garden Pea & Ham Hock Soup
Potted Rabbit with Gooseberry, Ginger & Elderflower Compote, Toasts, and Baby Leaf Salad
Crab Cannelloni with Crayfish Sauce
Irish Buffalo Mozzarella & Heirloom Tomato Salad, basil & olive oil
Two of the Fish Specials, Top: Hake, on Creamy Mash, Summer Veg & Lemon Butter Sauce, and Whole Black Sole, Butter Sauce, Capers and a Baby Leaf Salad
Selection of Home-Made and Golden Hill Farm Ice Cream and Sorbets, Shortbread Biscuit and a choice of either Chocolate or Butterscotch sauce
Lemon & Elderflower Curd Tart with Raspberries & Cream

Now that Autumn is here, we are looking forward to seeing what will be on the menu for the coming months.

Moloughney’s big brother, Woodstock Café  is located in Phibsboro’, and has been serving the good citizens of Dublin and further afield for quite a few years now.

  1. Thanks for your comment, Magda, you really should go, I think you will like it, especially if you live nearby. It's a bit of a drive for us, but well worth it 🙂
