I had been following the progress on Twitter, of a competition being run over the past couple of months in Fenn’s Quay Restaurant in Cork. Having seen the standard of cooking, I decided that I would do my best to attend the final cook-off.
The idea behind this endeavour was to give an opportunity of cooking in a professional kitchen to those who had not previously done so. Also, it seemed like a great night out to sample lovely dishes and, of course, to socialise!
So off we went, and with a mini-break in mind decided to include this event in our plans.
I was so glad I was not a Judge for this competition, and did not envy those the task of having to decide between the menus.
Both menus were seasonal, beautifully presented, and each dish was full of flavour. With that in mind, here are both menus, with a description of each dish.
Amuse Bouche
Antipasti of Bruschetta, accompanied by a Bloody Mary Shot
Beef & Beetroot Slider, with a Horseradish Mayonnaise
A peek inside the slider
Starters
Baby Beetroot & Shallot Tarte Tatin with lightly dressed Rocket Salad

Crispy Duck Egg, with asparagus Soldiers, and Hollandaise Sauce
Mains
Lamb neck fillet, marinated in wild garlic & mint with a polenta cake, sautéed spinach, & vine roasted tomatoes
Italian style Irish lamb shank, with creamy mash & green beans
Desserts
Churros with Mocha Ganache & a Chocolate Mousse

Tiramisu Cake with a Mascarpone Cream, Espresso shot, and Vanilla Ice cream
Our lovely hostess, Miss Kate, chatting with the diners
And the winner is… Jeni Pim receiving her certificate
We were told after that the other Chef, Sarah O’Riordan was ill on the night, and could not make it, due to Health & Safety reasons, but her dishes were cooked and sent out via. text messages and instructions. We were all so sorry to hear she could not make it to Fenn’s Quay, but enjoyed her dishes, all the same. This is not a review, just an overview of our experience.
I won’t tell you which menu belonged to whom, as I already said, that was not my job, thankfully.
Such a great night, and what a welcome we received when we arrived at Fenn’s Quay. Thank you all for a great night and great company, Tori, Niall, Melanie, Neil, Margaret, Evin, Nigel, and the very lovely Kate!
We were very happy to pay for our dinner on the night, and no favours were asked for or given.
