Just Ask, You Never Know!

Glass of White Wine
A few months back, with our Chef Patron friend’s permission, I tried taking some shots of a few of the dishes from his menu with my Digital camera, but did not have the right lens at the time, and “forgot” to turn off the flash!  The pictures were quickly deleted!

*Having experimented with my camera since then, I decided I would, once again, “just ask” if he would allow me take photographs in his restaurant. So, last night, I did just that. Even though we have been friends for a long time, I did realise that he might say “no, he would prefer professional shots”, which he was quite entitled to say. Thankfully, this was not the case.

Golden Rule:  Never publish a restaurant post, or any post, which contains shots of customers, or members of the public in general, unless you have their express permission to do so.

I did a post last Summer on a restaurant in Lanzarote.  There too, I asked for permission, and they were delighted tourists wanted to photograph their dishes!

Here are just a few shots of my first attempt at taking pictures in a restaurant here, which is not the same as Food Photography, but is often confused with same.

I was pleased with the results.  The restaurant was dimly lit for ambiance, and I still wasn’t sure if I could get even one shot. However, no customers were disturbed by nasty camera-flash during this process, as this time I “remembered” to turn it off, nor were any even aware I was taking photographs in the first place!

  1. You did well! Always difficult shooting in a restaurant unless it's daytime, or you use lighting of some kind. I'll help you with a white-balance trick if & when we finally meet 🙂

  2. These look really well. I don't do many cooking posts on my blog, but the few that I have done I've been frustrated by how awful my food looks when its photographed. There is obviously a knack to it.

  3. Thank you for your comment :)It's all about learning how to use your camera to it's best, and believe you me, I am still learning! Getting there, slowly, but surely 🙂
